Prepare the Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Preheat the Oven
While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.
Shape the Pizza
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a floured surface.
Roll it out into a circle about 12 inches in diameter. If you're using a pizza stone, transfer the rolled dough onto a pizza peel lightly dusted with flour. If using a baking sheet, place the dough directly on it.
Add the Sauce and Cheese
Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the pizza base, leaving a small border around the edges.
Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce.
Add the Toppings
Divide the pizza into four sections.
Spring: Add artichoke hearts to one quarter.
Summer: Layer fresh tomato slices in another quarter.
Autumn: Add sautéed mushrooms to the third quarter.
Winter: Place cooked ham or prosciutto in the last quarter.
Drizzle a little olive oil over the top for added flavor.
Bake the Pizza
Carefully transfer the pizza onto the preheated pizza stone or place the baking sheet in the oven. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.
Serve
Once done, remove the pizza from the oven and let it stand for about 5 minutes. Slice into wedges, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and serve hot.
