Equipment

  • Equipment Needed: Skillet, fish spatula, lemon squeezer, plate

Ingredients

  • Ingredients
  • 2 fresh mackerel fillets
  • 1 lemon juiced and zested
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish
  • Variations
  • Herbs: Feel free to add fresh herbs like dill or thyme for extra flavor. They pair wonderfully with the lemon.
  • Spices: A sprinkle of red pepper flakes can add a nice kick if you enjoy some heat.
  • Cooking Method: Instead of pan-frying you can also bake the mackerel. Just preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C), place the fillets on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice, and bake for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Tips and Substitutions
  • Fish Alternatives: If mackerel isn't available sardines or trout work well. Adjust cooking times accordingly.
  • For Gluten-Free Diets: This recipe is naturally gluten-free making it a great option for those with gluten sensitivities.
  • Dairy-Free: This dish is dairy-free; however if you want to add a creamier element, consider a drizzle of coconut cream or cashew cream after cooking.

Instructions

  • Prepare the Fish: Rinse the mackerel fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This helps achieve a nice sear when cooking.
  • Seasoning: In a bowl, combine the lemon juice, lemon zest, minced garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well. From my own personal experience, letting the mackerel marinate in this mixture for about 5-10 minutes enhances the flavor.
  • Heat the Skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a tablespoon of olive oil. Ensure the skillet is hot before adding the fish.
  • Cooking the Fish: Place the mackerel fillets skin-side down in the skillet. Cook for about 4-5 minutes until the skin is crispy. Gently flip the fillets using a fish spatula and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the flesh is opaque and flakes easily.
  • Serving: Once cooked, transfer the mackerel to a plate. Drizzle the remaining lemon-garlic mixture from the skillet over the fish. Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color.
  • Time to Stand: Allow the dish to sit for about 5 minutes before serving. This gives the flavors a chance to meld together beautifully.
