Equipment

  • Equipment Needed: Cocktail shaker, measuring jigger, glass (highball or rocks), muddler (optional), and a strainer (optional)

Ingredients

  • Ingredients
  • Base Recipe
  • 2 oz tequila silver or reposado
  • 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz ginger syrup store-bought or homemade
  • 1 oz soda water
  • Pinch of chili powder or a few slices of fresh jalapeño for the spicy kick
  • Ice cubes
  • Grapefruit slice and jalapeño slice for garnish
  • Homemade Ginger Syrup optional
  • 1 cup fresh ginger peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Variations
  • For a non-alcoholic version: Substitute tequila with soda water or tonic water and use extra ginger syrup for sweetness.
  • Herb-infused: Add fresh mint or basil for an herbal twist.
  • Fruity kick: Muddle in some fresh berries like strawberries or raspberries for added flavor.

Instructions

  • Method
  • Preparing the Ginger Syrup (Optional)
  • Combine: In a saucepan, mix together the sliced ginger, sugar, and water.
  • Simmer: Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Cool: Remove from heat and let it cool completely. Strain out the ginger pieces and store the syrup in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
  • Making the Spicy Ginger Paloma
  • Mix the Ingredients: In a cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and ginger syrup. If you want to add spice, muddle a few slices of jalapeño in the shaker before adding the other ingredients.
  • Shake: Fill the shaker with ice and shake well for about 15-20 seconds until well chilled.
  • Strain: If desired, strain the mixture into a glass filled with ice. Alternatively, you can serve it directly from the shaker.
  • Top Off: Add the soda water to the glass, stirring gently to combine.
  • Garnish: Add a slice of grapefruit and a jalapeño slice for garnish.
  • Tips and Substitutions
  • For a sweeter drink, adjust the amount of ginger syrup to taste.
  • Fresh grapefruit juice is key for the best flavor; avoid bottled varieties if possible.
  • Dietary Needs: For those with sugar concerns, use a sugar substitute in the ginger syrup or opt for a diet soda in place of regular soda water.
